MCI Pre Match Preview: Manchester City vs Arsenal
September 22, 2024In an early season matchup between the Premier League’s two most obvious contenders, reigning, 4peat champions Manchester City are gearing up for a massive showdown as they welcome the 2x consecutive runners up in Arsenal to the Etihad. With City determined to maintain their spot at the top and Arsenal desperately hoping to obtain their first league title under manager Mikel Arteta, this game will have huge implications in the title race. Pep Guardiola’s men, who have picked up all 12 possible points so far this season, will be aiming to show why they’re still the team to beat. Facing Arteta’s in-form Gunners, City fans can expect an intense battle—but one where the Blues will come out ready to send a clear message to the rest of the league. We’ll break down the key battles to watch, City’s potential lineup, and what to expect from Arsenal. Here’s everything you need to know ahead of this crucial match.
TEAM NEWS:
As expected, both Oscar Bobb and Nathan Ake remain sidelined for the foreseeable future as they continue their recoveries from injury. There is some positive news, however, as Savinho was spotted training as normal this week. The Brazilian youngster was substituted at half-time during City’s midweek clash against Inter, sparking concerns about a potential injury.
There is a big question mark surrounding Kevin De Bruyne, who was substituted at half-time during the Inter match as a precaution due to his ongoing injury concerns. Speaking ahead of the upcoming match, Guardiola revealed that De Bruyne is feeling “a little bit better” and is expected to return to training tomorrow. While the Belgian has been managing his recovery carefully, Guardiola hasn’t ruled out the possibility of him starting this weekend, depending on how he responds in training.
ARSENAL PREVIEW:
Under former City assistant Mikel Arteta, Arsenal have developed into a dynamic, possession-based team that thrives on quick transitions and high pressing. However, when facing Manchester City, Arteta has shown a willingness and ability to adapt, often opting for a deep, compact defensive structure to nullify City’s attack. This approach worked in last season, earning Arsenal 4 out of 6 points against the Blues, and it wouldn’t be a shock to see him set up in a similar fashion again.
In attack, Arsenal generally emphasise building from the back with precise passing and fluid movement, often looking to create overloads in central areas. Bukayo Saka, operating from the right, is a key figure, known for his pace, dribbling, and ability to finish or deliver dangerous crosses. His partnership with Martin Ødegaard adds another layer to Arsenal’s creativity, another player who despite recently picking up an injury playing for country, is still more than capable of creating a chance out of nothing for the gunners.
Defensively, Gabriel and William Saliba form a solid partnership, blending physicality and composure, and they are also a threat on set pieces. Gabriel’s aerial prowess and Saliba’s positioning make them difficult to beat at both ends, with Arsenal scoring more set pieces than any other side in the league since the start of last season. With Declan Rice back in midfield, Arsenal add a crucial layer of defensive stability. Rice’s ability to break up play and defend transitions makes him an essential figure in ensuring balance across the pitch. Also keep an eye out on the two Arsenal wingers, who tend to work tirelessly off the ball, often helping their full back to double up on opposition wingers. As a unit, they often stay tight and compact; City will find themselves with an abundance of space out wide, however will struggle to build up in central areas. With these key players and Arteta’s tactical flexibility, Arsenal have been and will be a serious challenge in every phase of the game.
PREDICTED LINEUP:
Expect City to field a line up as close as possible to full strength on form. Ederson, Akanji, Dias, Gvardiol, Rodri, and Haaland all pick themselves, as they have all played regularly for City this season and at a high level. However, the right back position and forward spots are up for grabs, as well as the midfield positions pending De Bruyne’s status.
Despite starting all of the opening 4 league games, Rico Lewis may make way for the pace of Kyle Walker in defensive transitions. However, I expect Pep to reward the 19 year old’s form with a start against the Gunners.
Bernardo Silva has also started the season to a high standard, often playing as the link between build up and attacks. I expect him to keep his place ahead of Gundogan. His midfield partner Kevin De Bruyne will naturally be a huge miss for city. Despite this, POTY Phil Foden, who recently returned from an illness, looked bright in his short cameo vs Inter in midweek, and I expect him to fill the void left by the Belgian.
And finally to complete the attack, I expect Pep to opt for the control and tempo-setting of Jack Grealish, as opposed to the direct and unpredictable Jeremy Doku (expect him to feature in the latter stages of the game if City need a goal).
Similarly, I expect Savinho to keep his spot in the 11 despite his injury and half time substitution. In his short time at the club, we have twice seen him pick up a knock on the weekend, only to be fit for the next game, and I expect the same to happen again.
If he isn’t considered fit enough to play from the start, expect both Grealish and Doku to start, with the latter operating on the right, as he did vs West Ham.

MATCH + MOTM PREDICTIONS:
Sundays game stands a huge opportunity to send a message to the rest of the league, and assert our ambitions to win a record-extending fifth consecutive Premier League title. I expect City to follow through with a confident 2-0 win with Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland on the scoresheet for the blues. Expect Rodri to be the best player on the pitch, controlling the tempo of the match from minute one, while City dominate the possession stats.
