MCI Pre-Match Preview: Manchester City vs Inter Milan
September 18, 2024The Champions League is back in full swing and Manchester City, the reigning champions of England, are set to take on Inter Milan, the reigning champions of Italy, in a true clash of contenders. There isn’t too much history between the two clubs, having only met once in the past when Rodri’s solo goal earned City their first Champions League title in 2023. Simone Inzaghi and the Nerazzurri have only lost three of their last 20 UEFA Champions League matches (W11 D6) and will prove to be a stern test for Guardiola’s City, who are unbeaten in their last 23 games in the UEFA Champions League.
Inter Milan’s Tactical Approach:
Inzaghi has staked his claim as one of the best managers in the world due to his infamous 3-5-2 formation. While their stout defense is key, the versatility and fluidity of their players and system has been key to both Inzaghi and Inter’s evolution as a manager and team.
Key Tactics:
3-5-2 in Possession // 5-3-2 in Defense:
As mentioned before, Inter’s strength is in their fluidity and their versatility. Rather than a standard low-block, Inter operate more from a mid-block, reflective of their ability to adapt on the fly. Similarly to City, their CB’s are comfortable in possession, they create chances from width, and they’re adept at building and switching through the middle or wide areas. Inter’s midfielders will feel confident going up against any, as they possess an abundance of quality to match. However, Barella and Calhanoglu will have their hands full as they attempt to jump the empty spaces left by their marauding wingbacks. Calhanoglu in particular will be key as the link/switch between attack and defense.
Forward Play:
Marcus Thuram has started off hot this season, with four goals already to his name. Paired with Ballon D’or contender Lautaro Martinez, the Inter forward duo pose a formidable threat against City’s backline. Inter will undoubtedly create chances. There is plenty of pace, power, and dynamism in the two and they’ll look to be clinical.. something Lukaku failed to do in the Champions League final.
Wing Attack:
Wingbacks Denzel Dumfires and Federico Dimarco will look to establish width and create danger from wider areas, making runs and providing plenty of crossing opportunities for their striker duo. They will also need to stay alert to defend against City’s combination of technical and tricky wingers.
Man City’s Tactical Approach:
Pep Guardiola’s gameplan will focus on the things he values most: dominating possession, controlling tempo, and creating chances. With Erling Haaland leading the line, City will set up in a lone striker formation, likely shifting from a 4-2-3-1 to a 3-2-2-3 in and out of possession which like Inter, operates with some fluidity throughout the game.
Finish Your Chances:
As simple as it is to say, we finish our chances, we win. I don’t foresee a clean sheet for City but given our high line and confidence when attacking, I’m confident our focus is on outscoring rather than keeping the opposition out. Erling Haaland has started the season off in frightening form and he will look to continue his scoring run. I believe Foden will be reintegrated into the starting lineup to give us a penetrating, goalscoring presence from the midfield.
Chance Creation Through Wider Areas:
With Inter more than capable of earning their fair share of possession, City likely won’t dominate the ball as much as they’re used to. In order to circumvent Inter’s press and organized midfield, City will need to move the ball quickly and efficiently to wider areas, where wingers like Savino or Doku could be the X-factor against Inter’s Achilles heel. It is extremely difficult to press City’s midfield because of their technical quality and we will have to use that to our advantage.
Ederson the playmaker:
Much has been said about Ederson’s ability with his feet.. but not enough. Against a top, organized side like Inter, the margins are slim and Ederson could be the man to provide us the spark we need. His pinpoint passing essentially eliminates all areas of the pitch and creates 1v1 opportunities for Haaland. Whether that be against Acerbi or any of their other CBs, I only see one outcome.
Key Battles:
- Wide Areas: Whether it’s Inter’s wingbacks vs our fullbacks, or our wingers vs their back three in transition, these wide areas will be key.
- Midfield War: This is a midfield battle oozing with world class talent, experience, and dynamism. Will Rodri replicate his magical CL Final goal? Or will one of Inter’s midfielders step up to enact revenge for their loss?
- World Class Strikers: Haaland and Martinez are two of the best strikers in the world. Add in the in-form Thuram and we could be looking at goals galore.
