MCI Pre-Match Preview: Newcastle United vs. Manchester City
January 12, 2024Manchester City return to Premier League action this weekend, with the opportunity to reduce the gap on leaders Liverpool, who do not play until next Sunday. The Blues head to Newcastle United on Saturday night seeking to complete the double over the Magpies, who they defeated 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium in August. Easier said than done, however, with City having been beaten upon their last visit to Tyneside when they were dumped out of the Carabao Cup earlier this season.
Predicted line-up:
The champions have won their previous five games in all competitions, and they were bolstered by the return of both Jeremy Doku and captain Kevin De Bruyne in their 5-0 hammering of Huddersfield. Pep Guardiola suggested that De Bruyne may start at St. James’ Park, but he also revealed that John Stones and Erling Haaland are still sidelined.
Due to illness, Jack Grealish has been absent from training, which could allow Doku to come back into the starting lineup. Josko Gvardiol made his full debut in the reverse fixture and will likely continue at left-back. Meanwhile, Manuel Akanji was forced off during the FA Cup win last weekend which may cause an alteration to the back four.
Starting XI: Ederson; Walker, Dias, Ake, Gvardiol; Rodri, Kovacic, Foden; Bernardo, Alvarez, Doku.
Predicted Man of the Match:
Newcastle have lost each of their last three Premier League matches but only Aston Villa (9) have won more times at home than Eddie Howe’s side (8) this season. Not a routine game by any stretch but having been an unused substitute against the Terriers, a refreshed Rodri could be the key to victory.
The Spaniard is arguably City’s most consistent performer and will have the responsibility of nullifying the threat of Bruno Guimaraes.
The 27-year-old has exemplified time and time again that he is capable of dealing with Europe’s top midfielders and if City’s no.16 can get to grips with Guimaraes and company it could well lead to all three points for his side.
